The Origins of Tipcast
“Tipcast” is a daily tips and tricks podcast from the creators of “Uncompressed” – Tony Nilles and Thom Wetzel. “Uncompressed” was first created as a hobby spun out-of-control; the original concept was born of a hobby shared by both of the shows founders – video games, and the desire to talk about them. Both Tony and Thom were spending a significant amount of their free time playing video games then chatting via instant messenger, email, internet forms, etc. about the games that they had played. It was about this same time that podcasting was becoming more mainstream. Shows such as “This Week in Tech”, and “Diggnation”, were racking up listeners by the thousands; it was then that Tony had his epiphany – “there might be people out there that would be interested in the conversations that we are having – why don’t we start recording them”. Behold, the birth of “Uncompressed”.
While “Uncompressed” was in its 11th month of spouting off about video games, movies, programming, the internet, and geek-life, it was realized there was still something missing – a large and diversified audience. “Uncompressed” has maintained steady growth throughout its run; there are more and more people tuning in each time a new show is released – but the demographic is extremely narrow due to the subject matter presented on “Uncompressed”. For much of the shows content, someone outside the geek “culture” would have a hard time following the stories, and picking up on the importance of various topics discussed – a need was established to acquire a much broader audience.
It was about this same time that Tony was desperately trying to finish up his bachelor’s degree in computer science, and needed a project to seal the deal – a light bulb went on in Tony’s head that this would be the perfect time to develop and launch a new podcast aimed at the larger tech markets that “Uncompressed” was ignoring. And so it was this that started the “Tipcast” ball rolling; the idea was to develop a podcast that focused on “tips and tricks” – something that both Tony and Thom thought would appeal to both neophytes, and tech-savvy individuals everywhere. Enter Sean Partridge…
Sean Partridge was someone who Tony and Thom has known for years – he had made several guest appearances on “Uncompressed” to talk about riveting topics such as “Guitar Hero” and “The DDR Diet”. Sean, with his signature New York accent, expressed that he wanted to be involved in the “Tipcast” project and explained that he brought many years of marketing experience to the table. Sean wanted to get “Tipcast” into the ears of as many people worldwide as he possibly could – the English-speaking world immediately cowered in fear. But Sean did raise a valid question – was part of the trouble with “Uncompressed” a simple lack of marketing? Bringing Sean onboard would answer that question once and for all.
The goal of “Tipcast” is to develop a series of daily, short, concise, podcasts that people would listen to regularly – not unlike ones desire to check their email each morning, start the day with a cup of coffee, brush their teeth, etc. Tony, Thom, and Sean want to develop something that was accessible by all, not just the tech elite, and have the podcast actually impact peoples lives by providing them with useful information they could use on a daily basis. Through the use of their podcasting skills already honed via hours of labor on “Uncompressed” and the wondrous ability of RSS to “push” information down to their subscribers, T&T stand poised to turn “Tipcast” into the greatest podcast anyone had ever heard – in the past week.
